History of Soom Tea Estate

Captain J. Jerdin is credited as being the first planter of Soom tea estate in the year 1860, in that particular historic phase, when the plantation of tea bushes had just been initiated in the Darjeeling hills.

The name ‘Soom’ is derived from the Lepcha dialect (the local inhabitants of the region) which means triangle, describing the shape of the garden, which is actually triangular in shape.

 

Location of Soom Tea Estate

This tea estate, comprising of 237 planted hectares, is located at north western side of the Darjeeling district. It is at a distance of 18 kilometers from Darjeeling town.

The garden is flanked by North Tukvar Tea Estate in the north, Phoobshering Tea Estate in the east and Singtom Tea Estate in the south and river Rangeet flows on the northern valleys of this tea garden.

 

This is a high altitude Darjeeling tea garden planted in the early years of Darjeeling tea history. The  tea bushes are from pure chinary tea bushes, known for its natural flavours, a characteristic twang in taste which changes and matures into a better tea after a few months of production. These bushes are more than 130 years old, and are planted at an altitude of around 5300 feet from the sea level.

 

 

Darjeeling Teas of Soom Tea Estate

Darjeeling teas from this tea estate are mostly from chinary cultivar and almost all of them are exported to Germany and European region. Both the orthodox Darjeeling first flush teas and second flush teas are much in demand and have a good fan following in these regions.

 

 

Organic Certifications

Just like other tea estates of the Chamong group, this tea estate too strives towards ethical practices and 100% organic production and is under the process of conversion to a fully bio organic garden.

 

 

Ownership of Soom Tea Estate

This tea estate is presently owned by the Chamong group, who owns in total, a whooping seventeen tea gardens in Darjeeling and is the largest Darjeeling tea producer in the world. This tea garden was taken over from Williamson Magor, a British national, in the year 2001, who managed the affairs of the garden for over a century till the year 2001.
