History of Gopaldhara

The last quarter of 19th.Century saw the lease out of the valley on the majestic north eastern slope of the Rangbang for planning teas to ‘Tappu & Tare Sahib.’

Around 1881, this valley was planted with tea on lush green paddy fields which belonged to Gopal, the first half of the name from which the tea estate derived its name: Gopaldhara. Then, and even today, the paddy fields are interspersed with natural streams called dhara which means streams in local language.

Thus the name Gopaldhara which produces one of the finest Darjeeling teas in the world.
