History of Balasun Tea Estate

This plantation was established in 1871 by M/s Devenport & Company Ltd. The original name of the Garden was Nahore Balasun taken from the Lepcha dialect. It was renamed as Balasun only based on a name of a river flowing southwards at lower area of garden. During 1963 this property was taken over by M/s Darjeeling Consolidated Tea Company Ltd. (Bajoria Group). The garden was managed till February 2005 when Jayshree Tea & Industries Ltd. took over the management of this property. The garden is maintained and managed still by the same company.

 

 

Location of Balasun Tea Estate :

Balasun Tea Estate is located at about 65-70kms from Bagdogra Airport, under Kurseong Sub division of Darjeeling Hill district, situated 7 km below NH – 55A originating from Siliguri towards Darjeeling near tiny hamlet of SONADA town. It is flanked by Moondakotee Tea Estate in the North, Margaret’s Hope Tea Estate in the East, Nagari Farm in the West and Ambootia Tea Garden in the South. The area under cultivation is roughly between 350 meters to 1400 meters.

The Darjeeling teas from Balasun had fuller body with Muscatel characteristics.

Other Agriculatural products from the regions of Balasun Tea Estate are oranges, ginger, cardamom, and others.

 

Certificates:

Balasun Tea Estate is certified  as HACCP by the SGS India Pvt. Ltd. Apart from this, a certification for Fair Trade awaited.
